Social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. The term refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue.

Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, which allows the creation and exchange of user-generated content.

Businesses may also refer to social media as consumer-generated media (CGM). A common thread running through all definitions of social media is a blending of technology and social interaction for the co-creation of value.

Social media may have been integral to the Arab revolutions and revolts of 2011. As one Cairo activist succinctly put it, However, there is some debate about the extent to which social media facilitated this kind of change.

For the question “How's the social media affecting me and the lives of people around you?” social media is really give me a good impact. At the first time I using computer just for make assignment with Microsoft office and maybe play a game and usually I just spend 1 hour in front of the computer but, now I can spent much time in front my computer. It happen because now we can browsing, search, study and see anything in computer. The big effect why much people spend much time with computer is because social media. Today we can see much people using facebook, twitter, blogger, tumblr, youtube and etc.

 Me and I think much people always using that for 3-4 hour for each day. Because with that we can chat, watch video, share anything and much more we can do with social media. For me, I using that for search and do assignment, watch a video, chat and much more, and for people around me think they same like me. Example is my mother, she always use Yahoo messenger to  contact me and her family and sometimes she read and get some news in there.
